Gone Wrong

April 8, 2008

Working at a psychiatric hospital was never boring. In fact, it was down right over stimulating. When I came to work one day, one of my coworkers came into my office and asked me if I heard what happened yesterday evening. “No, what happened?” She replied,” girl you won’t believe this but, a family session went really wrong yesterday.”  I sat down and had a bewildered expression on my face.  There was a male patient in his 30’s who was admitted to PICU for suicidal thoughts and gestures.  His family came to visit with him and to see if his status had improved.  They sat in the TV room and all appeared to be going well. The staff kept a watchful eye but, soon turned to other duties.  The patient abruptly got up from his family members and ran to his room and shut the door.  Over 15 minutes passed and the family grew concerned.  They went to open the patient’s door but, something was preventing them from doing so.  The staff ran and assisted them and they were able to open the door.  The family rushed in and found their son hanging.  His body was released from its position and the family attempted to revive him but to no avail.  The patient was pronounced DOA and the staff on duty were all fired.
